Considered iconic among songwriters in acoustic and bluegrass music, Louisa Branscomb has long been considered a pioneer among women acoustic performers and songwriters. Her distinctions include 3 International Bluegrass Association Awards, another 6 nominations, two Grammy cuts (Alison Krauss and John Denver), 2014 IBMA Song of the Year ("Dear Sister," with Claire Lynch), 1993 SPBGMA Song of the Year (“Steel Rails,” Krauss), and over 190 recorded original songs by artists including Claire Lynch, Krauss, John Denver, Dale Ann Bradley, and her own works. She is a two-time winner of the prestigious Chris Austin Songwriting Contest with songs placing in Bluegrass (1st) and General (3rd). Her classic #1 SPBGMA 1991 Song of the Year Steel Rails is to date the longest running chart hit in bluegrass (also a Billboard country hit). Scoring Song of the Year in 2014 (IBMA) her co-write with Lynch, "Dear Sister" topped and commanded charts in bluegrass, Americana, and folk music. These distinctions plus her activist work building community through musical events and songwriting, and combined with her prestigious songwriting program at Woodsong Songwriter Retreat recently earned her the 2017 IBMA Distinguished Achievement Award. She has been honored with inductions to the Atlanta Country Hall of Fame and the Alabama Bluegrass Hall of Fame, and with a Georgia Lifetime Achievement Award.
